The 10 dos and donts of networking you need to know

The 10 dos and donts of networking you need to knowThe 10 dos and donts of networking you need to knowNetworking is a necessary evil but when used for the forces of good, its an amazing tool that ignites opportunity through relationship building. Learning how to do it well is a skill set unto itself and one that takes practice. Most of my business mantras dont come from Kid Inc. but with regards to networking, I completely agree with him Lets just be honest. Lets be real. Here are a few dos and donts to help you get through your next networking event.1. Dont be afraid to introduce yourselfWhile it can be intimidating to roll up on someone and departure a conversation, its often necessary. There is no shame in admitting that bum rushing your way into conversation isnt your favorite approach for relationship building. Sincerity often goes a long way so be honest and acknowledge your discomfort. If youre from the cool and confidant school of networking then know what you plan to say to e ngage your audience.2. Try and be a friend firstDont go in for the kill and start with your elevator pitch. The me me me approach is never a big hit Genuinely be interested in whomever you are speaking too. Most people love to talk about themselves so start there. Ask questions about who they are, where they are from and what they do before you hit em with the glory that is you.3. When sharing info about yourself be sure to keep it concise yet interestingHave the basics ready but make sure it doesnt sound scripted. Talk with passion and confidence but make sure its an inclusive conversation and elend a sales pitch.4. Keep it short and sweetIf communicating via email or social media messaging it is important to keep it short and sweet. Copy-heavy outreach is usually skimmed or wholly ignored. The subject is as important as the text in the body. A creative subject gets your email opened and read.5. Bring a wingmanSometimes having a friend or business associate at your side that knows you well allows you to play off each other and makes the conversation a little more natural and informal. AND NEVER FORGET YOUR BUSINESS CARDS6. Do something to make yourself memorableA funny story, a quick anecdote or a seemingly unrelated question about your conversation partners life will make you standout and give you a chance to follow up via email and reference your own originality. A little humor and wit can go a long way. This is especially important if you are at a networking event where everyone has similar goals and lots of conversations are happening.7. Look for commonalityIts great to find a in gleichem abstand nebeneinander interest that you can bond over. It doesnt matter if its work related or totally inane and random. Whether its a mutual passion for Fetty Wap, a love of DIY crafts or a commitment to binge watching Homeland, finding common ground is a great way to solidify yourself in the hearts and minds of whomever youre chatting with.8. Dont be too thirstyIf you sense that whomever youre speaking to isnt interested gracefully bow out. Its like dating, its way better to be the ghoster rather than the ghostee.9. For networking in the online space dont be afraid of the cold pitch.Especially if you can find a way to engage with someone that will prevent it from feeling totally random. There is no shame in doing a little research without taking it to stalker-ville. It makes you seem prepared and shows that youre not interested in wasting anyones time. You are reaching out for a reason.10. Make sure you follow up.Follow up in some capacity a few days to a week later. Keep the conversation going with new questions and interest so your relationship can evolve. Make a plan for a future meetup. This article was originally published on Create and Cultivate.

5 ways motherhood actually helped my career

5 ways motherhood actually helped my career5 ways motherhood actually helped my careerFor many women, becoming a mother equals a career crossroads. If youre privileged enough to have options, you might wonder Do I lean in or scale back? Look for part-time work or take extra gigs to pay for diapers? Stick it out with my company or trade a traditional job for one requiring nursery rhymes and tummy time?Motherhood can stall or derail a career - and for some women it does - but Im lucky it reinvigorated mine.Make no mistake, my road back to work was filled with potholes. The first month on the job after maternity leave was miserable. My angelic baby boy, who previously took bottles like a champ and dozed for hours, tischplatzset one foot in daycare and promptly went on strike. He rejected their bottles in favor of late-night nursing. He cried at the top of his lungs whenever he entered his crib. No one in our house was sleeping at night, not even the dog.As I reacclimated to my full-tim e job, I was depressed, hormonal, and barely functioning. I was tempted to resign out of sheer exhaustion. Instead, I persevered. And more than a year later, Im glad I did - because becoming a mom advanced my career in ways I never expected.I spent less time at the bro but got more doneBefore I had my son, I could always log a few late nights in the office to manage my workload when it was heavy. After I returned to work, I was juggling set drop-off and pick-up times for daycare and babys bedtime, and I no longer had that flexibility. Due to my sons sleep struggles, squeezing in extra work at home - even on the weekends - was a challenge. I worried how Id get everything done. The new constraints on my time forced me to take a hard look at my work habits. I began by prioritizing my essential, deadline-driven work and turned down any projects/meetings I could without committing career suicide. I spent less time chatting with coworkers and going out to lunch. I worked from home once a week and used that time to focus on major projects. This was hard. I had major relationship FOMO when I scaled back on socializing at work. But the changes I made? They worked. And when my child started sleeping peacefully through the night (many months later), my next level productivity really paid off - I rarely had to work outside of my office hours.Statistically speaking, Im in good company. According to a 2014 study from the Federal Bank Reserve of St. Louis, working moms consistently outperformed their childless coworkers. Those with two children performed even better. As women, we need to lead the way in supporting other women, including the mothers we work alongside. My family commitment made me more committed to my career-and companyDoing well at work has always been important to me, but my drive to succeed only deepened after I had a little one to think about. Now Im inspired to do well at work because I need to provide for him, and because I want to set a positive example . Being separated from my son during the day is harder than I ever imagined, but stepping away from my career completely would have been hard, too. This ongoing struggle has helped crystalize my conviction to work at a job I love.Even though I feel more committed than ever, Im aware implicit bias is working against me - and other mothers in the workplace. Working mothers are judged as less competent and less committed to their jobs, the Longest Shortest Time podcast reported in its series, ItsaRealMother. This is so not OK - we can and should do better. As women, we need to lead the way in supporting other women, including the mothers we work alongside.Im grateful to work for a company that values mothers. Flexible working arrangements, executives who are mothers, a great lactation room, and a moms group at my company made it easier for me to transition back to work. Id always known my company was family-friendly, but Im even more loyal now since I benefit from a company culture t hat embraces motherhood. This post was originally published on CareerContessa.com.

What is a Virtual Internship And Why You Should Consider Doing One - Resumonk Blog

What is a Virtual Internship And Why You Should Consider Doing One - Resumonk Blog What is a Virtual Internship And Why You Should Consider Doing One Rahul was worried about his future and was scared when he looked to global meltdowns and cut throat competition of job market. Being unable to secure admissions in IITs or NITs he was worried that not carrying a brand name on his CV will be worsening his chances to get a good job. He came from a small town and was also not having good communication skills which hindered the path of a bright future. Then he discovered that his laptop which has been his soul mate since the starting of his college life can be a solution to all his problems. He started searching about work from home internships about which he came to know from his seniors. After few rejections at last he was able to secure a social media marketing internship and from that point he never looked back and ended in getting a job in a multinational. His parents as well as his friends were amazed by his transformation. The only reason for his success was that he kept the learning process running during his online internships a nd developed his skills alongside. So just what are Virtual Internships? Virtual Internship is just like any other internship just that in a VI a student will never have to set foot into an employer’s office. They can complete their  internship  right from their comfortable couch at home or from their lazy bed in their hostel! By this get more internship experience on to your profile.Sit in some remote town in India, and intern for the UN or NASA or some NGO in Africa. How cool is that! So I will discuss what the benefits of doing an internship from home are and what can be its disadvantages (Don’t worry they are very few and can be overtaken very easily). Benefits of Virtual Internships The biggest advantage is that you don’t have to wait for your summer vacations for these internships. You can join them 12 months a year and you can join as many as you can(Yes you heard “as many”).There is no restriction on how many such internships you can join if you can devote your time to each of the projects and complete the task given in each internship. You get to work with the start ups where you have ample opportunity to learn, make mistakes and then again learn from your mistakes. As these start ups are mostly owned by fresh college pass outs you can communicate in a better way with your coworkers as they have just left the college life in which you are right now and will be able to understand your problems and provide their solutions more efficiently. You just need your laptop and an internet connection. You don’t have to worry about how to reach to your workplace as you will be sitting in your hostel room, enjoying maggi and doing you work. You also don’t have to worry about the dress code as to which tie to wear and are your shoes polished or not. You can work wearing cool shorts and a T-shirt or while you are in a towel just out of the shower. If you are working as a content writer you get to improve your communication skills exponentially as you get regular feedback from your readers and recognize your weak areas. If you are doing a research internship you broaden your knowledge base as you are exposed to a variety of topics from different areas of study. So by doing this, you increase your knowledge as well as you are able to develop a viewpoint regarding various affairs. You are able to meet people and students from across the country. You are able to know what they are doing. You get to know the founders of different start ups and build contacts which can even turn into a job offer if your work is extraordinary. Disadvantages of Virtual Internships As you are working from home there is no one to keep an eye on you. The progress reports are viewed regularly but still if you become careless there is nothing much someone can do about it. Still if you work and leave your casual attitude, this internship can be a proof of you self-discipline and responsible attitude. You will be not exposed to real office-environment. This is a drawback but the other side of the coin is that you have a choice of working around the year and that also in a number of companies. So keep working and if you have not started yet, start immediately as there are a lot of opportunities to learn and develop your skills. Give these internships your very best and you will surely pat your back for taking such decisions in future. So start working and work hard as you never know when a work from home internship gives you a full time job opportunity. Good luck! This post has been contributed by Varun Upadhyay.

Avoid These Design Agency Self-Promotion Issues

Avoid These Design Agency Self-Promotion Issues Avoid These Design Agency Self-Promotion Issues Self-promotion is perhaps one of the trickiest projects any advertising, marketing or design agency can undertake. It seems odd to outsiders that this would even be an issue. After all, when youre the client, surely you can do whatever you want, right? Well, sadly perception is much more idealistic than reality. Here then are the reasons why self-promotion is so tough, and a few basic guidelines you can follow to ensure this task is both a fun and creative one and not a monkey on your back. Landmines of Self-Promotion, and How to Navigate Them. There are a lot of issues associated with self-promotion. The top six often hamstring even the biggest and best advertising and design agencies: The Project Isnt Taken SeriouslyIt is by far the biggest problem with self-promotion projects. Someone (or a committee) within the agency decides that its time to do some self-promotion work. An account manager has a quick chat with someone from the senior team in the coffee room. They then drop in on a creative team and mention in passing that some self-promotion ideas would be good. And then everyone just hopes that it will all appear like magic, being exactly what everyone in the agency wants to see, and done with little fuss or effort. It is all wishful thinking. If the job isnt taken seriously, the work wont be seriously good. It wont even be mediocre. And eventually, it will have to be redone, perhaps several times. If the agency is serious about self-promotion work, treat it in the same way that you would treat a paying clients project. The Job Always Takes The Back SeatAnother big problem with self-promotion work is that it is always going to be the job thats put on the back burner because paying jobs always take precedence. Now, thats all well and good, but the reason you get those paying jobs is often through work thats done on the backs of the agencys staff. Its fine to put it off when big jobs hit, like pitches, but if the job is scheduled and in the traffic system, give it the respect it deserves. Theres No Creative  BriefIt cannot be stressed enough - every job needs a creative brief, there are no excuses for bypassing it. Often the cry is one of but everyone knows who we are or its self-promotion, we can do whatever we want. Well, no. There should always be a strategy, a goal, a set of guidelines, some firm direction, and a deadline. Without a brief, you are putting up a big, red flag that says this project doesnt really matter and youll be right. You cant build anything without a foundation. No Budget Has Been Assigned It can be the cause of some major headaches. The creative will ask whats the budget, and the account team will say there isnt one, do what you like. Of course, that all comes crashing down when the ideas are presented, and a senior partner announces that the budget for the job is two nickels and a bag of rice. Attain a budget from the people who control the money. The ask for a little more, just in case. Now give your parameters to the creative team, and always be prepared to go back to the table with an option that will be over-budget but will make a huge splash. Theres No Media PlanIt is something that needs to be hammered out between everyone in the agency, including the creatives, the account team, the production department, traffic, and media buying. What is the purpose of the self-promotion? Is it going to be a guerrilla stunt, an online video, a print piece, posters, PR, or something else? No doubt the creative department will have ideas, but some basic parameters should be in place, and the respective departments should be ready to act. There Are Too Many ClientsOne of the biggest complaints of any agency is that there are too many opinions ruining the creative work. Ironically, this also happens within the agency as well. People are human, they all want to be heard, and they all believe their opinions are valid. For the sanity of everyone involved, and to save time, put one person in charge of the final decision, and leave it that way. It will more than likely be someone on the senior management team or the Creative Director. Letting the owner or partner chime in at the last second will create havoc. How to Side-Step Self-Promotion Altogether Aside from addressing all of those problems above, there is another way to do self-promotion, without actually setting aside any time to do a campaign. The answer lies in the work your agency does on a daily basis: Do Great WorkKiller creative work is its own promotion campaign. If your agency is constantly putting out huge ideas that bring in customers and create buzz, you wont need to do any self-promotion work. Win Recognized Industry  AwardsIsnt this the same as doing great work? No, its not. Scorsese and Spielberg did many great movies long before they ever won an Academy Award. Similarly, some Academy Award winners have had long careers based on one good movie they did 20 years ago. If you win awards, you have clout. Clout brings in clients. Keep Your Clients HappyHappy clients make a thriving agency. That doesnt mean your agency should do everything the client asks. No, it should provide the client with everything his or her business needs, and when the client is successful, everyone is. And that will lead to more billings. Let Word Of Mouth SpreadSome businesses will not advertise in the usual places. Some wont even have a website (although these days, thats verging on suicidal). However, there is a certain cachet in being spread by the good word of clients and colleagues. Dont rely on it for too long though; an invisible agency is not exactly walking the walk.

Science backs up this How I Met Your Mother theory on hot people

Science backs up this 'How I Met Your Mother' theory on hot people Science backs up this 'How I Met Your Mother' theory on hot people Some might recall the  â€œNot A Father’s Day,” episode of the popular CBS show How I Met Your Mother. In it, Barney Stinson, portrayed by the decidedly less obnoxious Neil Patrick Harris, bolts to correct his sitcom comrades after they remark upon a table of attractive women. “You have just become victims of the cheerleader effect,” The phenomenon as Stinson explains, that occurs when a group of individuals seems “hot” but only as a group   The wisdom of the cheerleader effect is then demonstrated to comedic effect, with one of the girls in actuality being portrayed by cast member Jason Segel in a wig and dress. Believe it or not, research actually supports the primetime TV show’s coinage.  A recent Darting Scout survey suggests that the public at large has become somewhat aware of this curiosity. Eighteen percent of all dating profile pictures feature multiple people in them, with the country of Ireland taking the lead. The assimilation effectBut this wasn’t the first study to prove that this television theory rings true.  The first scientists to do so-did so back in 2013.  Drew Walker Edward Vul first observed the cognitive bias across five studies titled,  Hierarchical Encoding Makes Individuals in a Group Seem More Attractive.  â€œWe propose that this effect arises via an interplay of three cognitive phenomena: (a) The visual system automatically computes ensemble representations of faces presented in a group, (b) individual members of the group are biased toward this ensemble average, and (c) average faces are attractive. Taken together, these phenomena suggest that individual faces will seem more attractive when presented in a group because they will appear more similar to the average group face, which is more attractive than group members’ individual faces,” they wrote in the abstract.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  The tw o researchers had participants rate the physical attractiveness of male and female subjects via an individual photo and then in groups, segmented in a randomized order. The individuals consistently scored higher in their group photos irrespective of the size of the groups.   Interestingly enough, the results did not indicate that they were informed by social status. Even individual photos lumped together into a single image yielded similar effects.  The following year, researchers, Rodway, Schepman and Lambert conducted a similar experiment, wherein unattractive subjects were photographed with one attractive person. The unattractive people were rated higher together, and the attractive person was rated lower alone.   The results both strengthen the psychology of the cheerleader effect, while issuing an interesting new element: the contrast effect.  The contrastive effect less broadly intimates that we appear more attractive when surrounded by less attractive people, and less attract ive when the contrary occurs. Together these two psychological occurrences come together under what’s been dubbed the assimilation effect.

What Your Manager Really Means When They Say....

What Your Manager Really Means When They Say.... What Your Manager Really Means When They Say.... It’s no surprise that bosses can often have a language all their own. From shorthand in emails to cryptic sayings that infer one thing, but mean another, it can be tricky to comprehend what you manager is saying from day to day. And if you’re like most employees, you simply want to do good work and deliver what the boss wants. Instead of going another week trying to decipher what your manager is saying, we thought we’d pitch in with a handy guide. Crack the code to every one of your manager’s phrases in no time. Here are TK things managers say, and what they really mean. 1. “When you get a chance, can you send that to me?” Translation: “Send me the documents that I needed an hour ago, please.” There is an underlying immediacy to this type of question. Don’t miss the cues. In this instance, your manager has heard what you’ve said but doesn’t think it’s actually a good idea. He or she cannot shoot down your idea, so they try to pad their forthcoming remark with some positive reinforcement. They’re trying to be kind, so kuddos to them. 3. “Can you take a look at these numbers?” If your manager pokes his head out of his office and asks you this question, he doesn’t mean that you should do it in a couple of hours, the subtext of that text is that you should review the data with a fine-tooth comb asap. This phrase is often said before a manager transitions into mentor mode. While you may be on the right track, your manager is letting you know that you need  a bit more direction. Good thing is that she or he is willing to help you. Ak questions and seek guidance  - now’s your chance. There’s nothing friendly about this phrase in an email. It’s a not-so subtle nudge that you’ve either missed a deadline or have waited too long to deliver on a project. Hop to it. Your manager really wants your input, so be ready with concrete opinions and insights. Don’t be caught off-guard by this one. Your manager is seeking out your input, and when this happens it’s a prime opportunity to shine. This really means, “I don’t want to get into it right now, but I’ll share the details later in a smaller group.” No, you’re probably not in trouble. Your boss simply wants to discuss in private for reasons that may not be known to you right now. 8. “We should set some time to meet about that.” Don’t be offended, but whoever said this probably not serious about actually scheduling a meeting. If you want to actually meet, you’re going to have to step up and set the meeting. Managers might say this because  their plates are full or the request doesn’t seem urgent. But if you’re proactive, you can make happen. Hint, hint. You should work late too.

Why You Should Track Your Accomplishments at Work - The Muse

Why You Should Track Your Accomplishments at Work - The Muse Why You Should Track Your Accomplishments at Work On the worst kinds of weeks- when we’re in a bad mood, when a co-worker’s being especially loud and distracting, when we’re dealing with one million different fires- it can feel like we’ve accomplished nothing. We go home on Friday feeling defeated, like we wasted our time on unimportant issues while our to-do list kept growing. The thing is- and you probably know this- you probably did more than you think. Those eight hours didn’t just fly by while you sat twiddling your thumbs. Even if you don’t have a new shiny project to show off, the skills you’re picking up, the challenges you’re facing, and the little efforts you’re making every day are ultimately moving you closer and closer to success. This is exactly why we frequently recommend you track your accomplishments on a regular basis, whether it’s in a journal, on a spreadsheet, or (shameless plug) with this handy worksheet we made for you! Why is this quick activity so life-changing? For one, it makes you feel good. If you can see on paper everything you did in a given week, you won’t get that “I’m useless” feeling in the pit of your stomach. And, even on the weeks that truly are slow, you can look back at this and see that you’ve actually achieved a lot recently (and if you haven’t, it’s a good time to question if the position’s still the right fit for you). Needless to say, it’s motivating- the more accomplishments you rack up, the more you’ll want to add to the list. Not to mention, having written (or, rather, typed) proof of all the things you’ve completed in your role only makes it easier for you to state your case for a raise or promotion in your yearly performance review. So let me explain how this works. First, download your own copy of the worksheet by clicking File Download as whatever file type you’d like. Then: Copy and paste the weekly template onto a new page (by clicking Insert Page break) Fill in the date(s) Jot down projects you finished (as well as how long they took and why they’re important), challenges or problems you solved, great feedback you received from your clients, your boss, and your co-workers, and one thing you’re really proud of. Set one small goal for next week to make sure you’re sticking to your schedule Repeat weekly! Realistically, this should only take you 10-15 minutes to fill out every week. And, you can do it as a starting-off-the-week-on-a-good-note Monday routine, or as a I-don’t-want-to-do-my-work-so-I’ll-do-this-instead Friday activity. Either way you can’t go wrong! This habit won’t just get you ahead- it’ll keep you from falling behind. If you see you’re accomplishing less and less every week, or taking too long on projects, you’ll know you need to pick up the pace before your boss notices your lack of productivity. Or, if you’re struggling to think of accomplishments, especially ones that make you truly proud, it’s a good sign that it’s time to evaluate your current role and whether it’s fulfilling enough for you. This quick exercise only has upsides- so get started today!

Meet a Formerly Self-Employed Guy Who Just Got a Job

Meet a Formerly Self-Employed Guy Who Just Got a Job Meet a Formerly Self-Employed Guy Who Just Got a Job Meet a Formerly Self-Employed Guy Who Just Got a Job Mike (age 44) had been self-employed as a painter and handyman for the past few years, but was ready to return to the world of steady paychecks and benefits. About six weeks ago, he applied for a job as a facilities maintenance manager, as he'd done dozens of times before. In the days and weeks that followed, he had a phone interview and three in-person interviews with the company. Each time, he felt things had gone very well, but he'd learned the hard way not to get his hopes up. But this time was different. Everything fell into place and he got the job! It wasn't quick, and it wasn't easy, but he did it. All in all, it took me over a year to get this job. I was lucky to still be working during that time. Since I was shifting from self-employment back into a full-time situation, I wanted to make sure I found just the right fit. I asked Mike what he'd learned during his job search, and what challenges he'd had to overcome. Here's what he had to say: Employers think of self-employment as a red flag. Mike found that interviewers seemed skeptical about the idea that he could be happy working for someone else again. I actually prefer full-time work, but being self-employed gave my wife and me the flexible schedule we needed when our kids were small. When Mike spelled it out in his cover letters that he was eager to commit to a long-term, full-time role, he had much better luck getting interviews. If you're missing a key credential, don't let it stop you from applying. My new job requires a professional certification that I don't have, but the rest of the job description was perfect for me. On his resume, he made sure his Summary of Qualifications showed that he had all the skills they were looking for, and he added this line: Willing to obtain XX certification in the near future. The result? His new employers are not only paying for the certification course, they've promised him a raise when he gets it! Be prepared for anything. A few days after he submitted his resume, Mike had his first phone screen. The woman asked a few basic questions, then asked me to submit my references. That was a surprise. Most times they don't want references until the end. Fortunately, Mike had his reference list ready to go, because he'd prepared it for an interview with another employer. It felt great to be able to say, 'Sure I'll send those references to you in a few minutes'. Something small, like thank-you notes, may be what clinches the deal. After each interview, Mike sent a thank you note to the interviewers. Just a quick email, but I always added a personal touch so it didn't sound like a robot wrote it. I'd say something like, 'it's nice to meet a manager who's so down to earth,' or 'it seems like you run a tight ship, which is the way I like to operate, too'. When it got down to Mike and one other candidate, those thank yous may have been what tipped the scales in his favor. Mike's job search has ended successfully, but it included a lot of disappointments along the way. His final advice? Just keep plugging away. Rejection sucks, but it's part of the game. You just have to dust yourself off, and keep the faith that it will happen eventually.

How to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekend

How to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekend How to completely disconnect over the Thanksgiving weekend Along with resisting the urge to over-indulge over Thanksgiving will also be the added challenge of trying your best not to tune out your family by obsessively checking your phone.According to a study last year by technology services company Asurion, Americans check their phones about once every 12 minutes- or 80 times a day. But wait, it gets worse. Many people are ruder than ever.In a November 2018 study on cell phone etiquette, Asurion found that most people are sorely lacking in basic conversation etiquette, with about 45% admitting to talking, texting or checking their phones in a public bathroom. Added to that, nearly 60% of adults admit to pulling out their phones at the table while out eating or drinking with others. Of those, 75% said their table companions didn’t mind. But we should mind. Here’s why. Conversation is a lost art. People seem to be having a harder time connecting in person, and it shows. If you’ve ever struggled to answer a question during an interview or even to make small talk with a stranger, you’re not alone. MIT professor Sherry Turkle, author of the bestselling book Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in the Digital Age has written about how our reliance on technology has impacted, if not harmed, our ability to empathize. Like smokers who smell of nicotine even without a cigarette in hand, those who are overly tech-reliant can sometimes seem out of touch in person. And lest you think you’re the only one, you aren’t. The weekend before Thanksgiving,  Not a Cellphone in Sight  was trending on Twitter along with wistful or hilarious memes.Convinced you should at least try to take a longer tech break? Try this: Don’t do it alone: There’s nothing worse than trying to make a huge change in your life only to find everyone else in your orbit still committed to your former bad habit. Ask your family or spouse or friends to go tech-free along with you, even just for a single meal. And then feel free to mock each other mercilessly as you start to twitch and cringe and desperately miss your phones. Create a backup plan (or person): Decide in advance how much time you plan on being off-line or away from your tech toys. Create an autoresponder and don’t include an emergency contact number unless it can’t be avoided. If you have a co-worker who will be working over the holiday weekend, consider having all your urgent issues diverted. Treat yo self: Do you love jigsaw puzzles? Or maybe you’re an avid home cook with no time to indulge. Find something you love but have been neglecting, and indulge over the holiday weekend. You’d be amazed at just how much creative time you can find if you’re not constantly checking for email. And it isn’t just giving something up. You’ll gain not just time to recharge and have fun, but long-term benefits.Your anxiety level might drop: Berkley News reports that “Extreme angst is on the rise nationally and globally, especially among teens and millennials. Among other factors, preliminary findings from UC Berkeley sleep researchers point to a chronic lack of deep restorative sleep.”The study also presents a link between sleep and anxiety. UC Berkeley neuroscientists Matthew Walker and Eti Ben Simon report that non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep “plays a key role in calming the overactive brain, especially in the brain regions that process and regulate emotions.” Ben Simon said, “The more time you spend in deep non-REM sleep, the less anxious you are in the morning.”So, at the very least silencing your phone, or choosing to leave it in the next room overnight means chances are good you’ll sleep better and wake up less anxious. Can’t ignore your phone enti rely? Consider changing your settings so only your closest relatives’ calls come through in case of emerg
